
Macy’s Inc., the American retail giant, announced today that it is going to close 11 underperforming department stores nationwide. On Thursday morning (Jan. 8, 2009), Macy’s reported a 4% decrease in same-store sales in the 2008 December holiday season compared to one year earlier. And according to the forecasted figures, the past holiday season sale is the worst for the whole retail sector in the past 10 years. In order to deal with the serious nationwide recession, Macy’s Inc. decided to close its underperforming department stores, located in 9 states across the nation, including: California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. The closing store locations are listed below.

2. The Citadel shopping center, Colorado Springs, Colorado (CO)

3. Westminster Mall, Westminster, Colorado (CO)
4. Palm Beach Mall, West Palm Beach, Florida (FL)
5. Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, Island of Hawaii, Hawaii (HI)
6. Lafayette Square, Indianapolis, Indian (IN)
7. Brookdale Center, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota (MN)
8. Crestwood Mall, St. Louis, Missouri (MO)
9. Natrona Heights Plaza, Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania (PA)
10. Century III Furniture and Clearance, West Mifflin, Pennsylvania (PA)
11. Bellevue Center, Nashville, Tennessee (TN)
Macy’s store-closing event is a piece of great news for consumers, since Macy’s said that they are going to run a store-closing final clearance sale next week. All the closing stores will participate in this sales event, with the exception of the Hawaii store.
